A Message from 2005 P73 Playwriting Fellow Quiara Alegria Hudes:
“True story: Back in the summer of 2004 I was living in New York for the first time, had very few connections and hadn’t had a major production yet. Then Page 73 came along and changed my life.
I submitted a few pages of a new play for the P73 Playwriting Fellowship. A lot of theaters say they develop new work, but they only accept fully written scripts that are nearly ready for production. With Page 73, I sent them the 17 pages that existed and said, “Here’s what I’m working on.” I was so excited when they told me I was a finalist that I finished a full draft by the time they announced I was their fellow.
Page 73 taught me how to develop work. They didn’t have a predetermined structure to the fellowship year. Rather, they said, “Tell us what you need,” making me take responsibility for my own process. At the end of the year, they offered to produce Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue, and I felt like we’d made something from the ground up, together. Page 73 set the bar very high for how I’ve been developing my work since, including In the Heights. This play and the production remain some of my proudest work.
Here’s the thing: I know that it’s support like yours that allows Page 73 to help writers who are just starting out – writers who (like me in 2004) have very few connections and haven’t had a major production. Thanks to Page 73, I’m now in a place where I can give back to them. So won’t you join me in supporting this invaluable company in 2010? In addition to their core programs, Page 73 is launching a new initiative called PAGE 2 that will help them support even more playwrights at the earliest stages of their careers. They’re going to announce more details about PAGE 2 next month. In the meantime, though, in order to move forward, they need our help.
Longtime Page 73 benefactors Joseph and Carson Gleberman have announced a challenge grant specifically designed to motivate new gifts and encourage increases in donations to help Page 73 expand its artistic programming. Here’s how this challenge grant works: Between now and April 30, 2010, or until Page 73 reaches a goal of $20,000, all donations by individuals who did not give last year will be matched 1-to-1, and all of those who did give last year but choose to increase their gift this year, will have their increased gifts also matched 1-to-1. Also, if a new or a renewing donor refers a friend, Joe and Carson will match both your gift and the gift you refer 2-to-1. So won’t you please consider making a gift to Page 73 this year to help them take advantage of this matching opportunity? Donations can be made online by clicking below, or can be mailed to Page 73, 138 South Oxford Street, #5C, Brooklyn, NY 11217.
I hope you will join me in supporting this incredible company and encouraging your friends to do the same. Your contributions do make a difference – look what they’ve done for me.” – Quiara Alegria Hudes
